The NTT IndyCar Series is gearing up for one of its most prestigious events ever, as it prepares to race through the streets of Washington, D.C. this weekend. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will see high-speed cars roaring down Pennsylvania Avenue passing by the U.S. Capitol and waving to spectators on the National Mall.

This historic event marks the first time race cars have ever been invited to the nation’s capital by a sitting president. The 147-lap race, covering 250 miles, is the 15th of 18 events on the IndyCar Series calendar. Drivers and fans alike are already buzzing with excitement.

The Road to the Freedom 250 Grand Prix

The first practice session kicks off at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday, with live coverage on FS1. The day will also feature a second practice session at 1 p.m. and qualifying for the NTT P1 Award at 5 p.m., both carried by FS2. Sunday is the main event, with a 90-minute pre-race show on FOX starting at 11:30 a.m. ET, followed by the official race broadcast at 1 p.m.

From a competition standpoint, this race is crucial as it is the first of four races to settle the series championship. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou is on track to capture his fourth consecutive season title and fifth in six years, leading by a staggering 133 points. Palou has already won six of the first 14 races this season and has a chance to become the second IndyCar Series driver in history to win eight races in consecutive seasons.

The Battle for Second Place

The real excitement lies in the battle for second place. Andretti Global’s Kyle KirkwoodTeam Penske’s David Malukas and Arrow McLaren’s Christian Lundgaard are separated by just six points. Lundgaard has won two races this season, Kirkwood one, while Malukas is still chasing his first career win.

This will be the sixth street circuit race of the season and the second in as many weeks. Palou has dominated street circuits, winning three of them, with Kirkwood and Marcus Ericsson taking one each. The field includes seven Indianapolis 500 winners, adding to the prestige of the event.

Recent Victories and Challenges

In the recent Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at MarkhamAndretti Global’s Marcus Ericsson secured a thrilling victory, ending a 63-race drought. Ericsson’s aggressive drive saw him pass Dale Coyne Racing’s Romain Grosjean for the win. Grosjean, who led 28 laps, settled for second place, his best finish since 2026.

The race was not without its challenges. Louis Foster of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing started from the pole but suffered a tragic ending after clipping the wall and hitting the concrete barrier. Despite the setbacks, the new 12-turn, 2.1-mile street circuit offered a balance of action and reaction, with several instances of cars coming together.

The series now turns its attention to the historic streets of Washington, D.C., where the Freedom 250 Grand Prix promises to be an unforgettable event. With the pre-race show on FOX beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET and the race shortly after 1 p.m., fans are in for a treat as the IndyCar Series makes history in the nation’s capital.
