Staying at one of the four Hilton Garden Inn locations in the city, I’ve had the privilege of exploring its diverse neighborhoods and hidden gems.
One such journey began with a simple quest for a restroom, leading to an unforgettable encounter at the Museum of Chinese in America. What started as a necessity turned into a delightful exploration of Chinese American history, accompanied by a free classical music concert performed by a live string quartet.

In June, I had the pleasure of celebrating my youngest daughter’s birthday at The Quin a Hilton Club. Our first stop was Central Park, where we paid tribute to Rachel Lillis a beloved anime voice actress, at her memorial bench. Located near the West 106th Street entrance, the bench offered a moment of quiet reflection amidst the park’s bustling atmosphere.
Our gesture of remembrance sparked a conversation with a fellow visitor, a yoga instructor who had recently moved to Manhattan. Intriguingly, she was also venturing into voice acting, adding a layer of serendipity to our encounter. This unplanned interaction made the day even more special for my daughter.
Pillow Cat Books: A Haven for Animal Lovers
The following day, we ventured to Pillow Cat Books an animal-themed bookstore on the Lower East Side. The store’s unique collection of new, vintage, and antique books, all centered around animals, captivated our imagination. The resident bookstore cat added a touch of warmth to the experience, making it a memorable stop on our journey.
McSorley’s Old Ale House: A Step Back in Time
Lunch led us to McSorley’s Old Ale House the oldest continually operating bar in Manhattan. Established in 1854, this historic pub has hosted notable figures like Abraham Lincoln and John Lennon. The tradition of serving two pints to every customer and the sawdust-covered floor added to the authentic experience.
Our visit coincided with a conversation with a bartender who had spent 50 years at McSorley’s. His stories about the city and the pub’s history provided a unique perspective on New York’s past. He recommended Veniero’s Pasticceria & Caffe an Italian bakery known for its delectable cannoli.
Veniero’s: A Taste of Tradition
Our final stop was Veniero’s, a bakery that has been operating since 1894. The promise of the best cannoli in Manhattan did not disappoint. The bakery’s enormous cases of pastries and cakes were a feast for the eyes, and the chocolate mousse cake was a highlight of our culinary adventure.
