In a world where children are often glued to screens, finding a place that captivates their imagination and ours is a rare treasure. Colby Woodland Gardens, managed by the National Trust is just such a place. Nestled about a 40-minute drive from Swansea this enchanting location has become our family’s favorite weekend retreat.
What makes Colby Woodland Gardens truly special is its blend of natural wonders. From sprawling meadows to dense woods, and a stunning walled garden, there’s something for everyone. But the real magic lies in the natural playgrounds scattered throughout the gardens. Fallen trees serve as rustic bridges over streams, and rope swings, suspended from sturdy branches, offer an exhilarating way to connect with nature.
Exploring the Natural Wonders
The gardens are a playground for the senses. The meadows are a riot of color, teeming with wildlife and wildflowers. The woods offer a sense of adventure, with hidden paths and secret spots waiting to be discovered. But the real highlight for our children is the rope swings. There’s something timeless and magical about swinging through the trees, feeling the breeze on your face, and hearing the laughter of children echoing through the woods.
A short walk through the trees leads you to the beach at Amroth a perfect spot to relax and enjoy an ice cream. The beach is a great place to unwind after a day of exploration, with its soft sand and gentle waves.
Extending the Adventure to Laugharne
On our way back, we often take the scenic coastal road to Laugharne a picturesque town in Carmarthenshire. Known as the home of Dylan Thomas the town is steeped in literary history. You can visit Dylan Thomas’ house and the boathouse where he did much of his writing. The town’s charm is further enhanced by its small but beautifully landscaped castle, which offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
The castle’s Summerhouse a writing room for both Dylan Thomas and Richard Hughes, is a must-visit. It’s easy to see why these literary giants found inspiration in this serene setting. The Summerhouse, with its panoramic views, is a testament to the town’s rich cultural heritage.
Laugharne Castle, though small, is a gem in its own right. The castle’s grounds are meticulously landscaped, offering a peaceful retreat. The views from the castle are breathtaking, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll or a picnic.
The Allure of South Wales
