In the rolling landscapes of the Czech Republic, a remarkable discovery has shed new light on the astronomical prowess of prehistoric communities. Near the village of Chleby, archaeologists have uncovered a 6,500-year-old sanctuary that predates the iconic Stonehenge by over a millennium. This ancient site, with its intricate design and celestial alignments, challenges our understanding of early European civilizations and their relationship with the cosmos.
The sanctuary, nearly circular in shape, spans approximately 230 meters in diameter and is encircled by a deep fossat exceeding 2.5 meters in depth. What sets this site apart are its twelve entrances strategically placed along the perimeter. These entrances, far from being randomly positioned, are meticulously aligned with key astronomical events, serving as a testament to the advanced knowledge of the people who built it.
The Celestial Alignments of Chleby
Researchers from the University of West Bohemia have meticulously studied the geometry of the sanctuary, revealing its deep connection to celestial phenomena. The entrances are aligned with significant points in the solar and lunar cycles allowing observers within the sanctuary to track these events with remarkable precision.

One of the primary areas of observation within the sanctuary is linked to the Moon’s most distant points on the horizon. These points are part of an 18-year cycle known as the lunar nodal cycle which affects the Moon’s position relative to the Earth. The sanctuary’s design enabled its users to monitor these changes, providing valuable insights into the lunar cycle’s impact on their lives.
Solar Alignments
The sanctuary also features alignments with the summer solstice sunrise and the winter solstice sunset. These alignments are strikingly similar to those found at Stonehenge, suggesting a shared understanding of celestial events among prehistoric communities. However, the Chleby sanctuary predates Stonehenge by over a millennium, pushing back the timeline of such advanced astronomical knowledge in Europe.
Ritual and Symbolism
Beyond its astronomical significance, the Chleby sanctuary was a hub of ritual activity. Archaeologists have uncovered bull skulls and horns near several entrances, indicating the animals’ symbolic importance in the site’s ceremonies. Over time, the sanctuary’s role evolved. By the Iron Age the site had lost its religious purpose, and the ditch was gradually filled in. A settlement eventually grew over the former ceremonial area, marking a shift in the site’s function and significance.
Researchers are now analyzing soil samples from the sanctuary and its surroundings to gain further insights into its use. Chemical traces left in the soil by past human activity could reveal how different parts of the site were utilized over time, providing a more comprehensive understanding of its history.
The Chleby sanctuary offers a rare glimpse into the lives of early farming communities and their sophisticated understanding of the cosmos.
