As someone who moved here with dreams of joining the art scene, I quickly learned that the city’s creative landscape is built by artists who improvise, create their own ecosystems, and contribute to a living, breathing network.
After years of exploring, I’ve fallen in love with the inventiveness that comes from L.A.’s sprawl. The best parts of the city are rarely found in mainstream spaces but in the conversations that happen outside studios, the connections made at gallery openings, and the shared experiences that turn a simple studio visit into an hours-long discussion about life and art.
The heart of LA’s art scene
My ideal L.A. weekend is a mix of studio visits, unconventional exhibitions, and shared meals with friends. It’s about discovering new artists, engaging in unexpected conversations, and ending the night at a bar where half the room just spilled out from a nearby gallery. These are the snapshots of the places and people that have fed me, surprised me, and made a long day of circling the block to find parking impossible to forget.
Downtown studios and galleries
My first stop is always visiting Greg Ito at his downtown studio. His work draws me into a layered dreamscape, rearranging my sense of time and space. Greg is also a great storyteller, pulling from archival family photos and childhood memories to create a heartfelt connection. From there, I head over to John Doe Gallery, run by two artists who show some of the best up-and-coming talent in the city.
I also make sure to visit Vita Kari, whose art explores internet culture and incorporates their family’s Middle Eastern diaspora. Their studio is a hub of creativity and conversation. Another must-visit is Samala Meza, whose soft, sexy paintings seem to breathe a secret into each piece. Her studio is situated at Princess Castle, an artist-run space that’s home to many great artists.
Koreatown and beyond
Devin Troy Strother’s studio is nestled among the produce district, always buzzing with activity. Often working all hours of the night, Devin’s studio is a gathering place for a cast of characters that mirror the subjects in his paintings. What began as an artist-run exhibition space in Young Chung’s apartment has grown into Commonwealth and Council, one of L.A.’s most championed emerging artist safe havens.
These spaces and the people who create them are what make Los Angeles’ art scene so vibrant and unique. It’s a city where art is not just something you view but something you experience, something that becomes a part of your life.
