In the heart of Italy, nestled between Verona and Lake Garda, lies a hidden gem that seems to defy the laws of physics. The Santuario Madonna della Corona perched precariously on the edge of Monte Baldo, is a sight to behold. My fascination with this extraordinary church began during the COVID lockdown, when a captivating image on Instagram piqued my curiosity. The journey to visit it became a reality once travel restrictions eased, and I found myself in Verona for the opera festival. Little did I know that this trip would lead me to one of the most remarkable churches I have ever seen.
The history of a cliffside sanctuary
The Santuario Madonna della Corona’s history dates back to around AD 1000, when hermits from the Abbey of San Zeno in Verona established a hermitage in this remote location. The site’s isolation offered a peaceful retreat from the world, far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
In the 13th century, a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria of Monte Baldo was built on the site. Accessible only by a narrow path carved into the rock, this chapel laid the foundation for the sanctuary that stands today. In 1437, the Knights of the Order of Saint John, also known as the Knights of Rhodes, took possession of the chapel. Between 1490 and 1521, they transformed it into a church, placing within it a sculpture commissioned by Ludovico di Castelbarco in 1432. This sculpture, known as the Madonna della Corona, is the centerpiece of the sanctuary.
The sanctuary has undergone several expansions and renovations over the centuries. The most notable transformation occurred in the 1970s when an Italian architect dismantled a significant portion of the structure and rebuilt it, preserving as many important elements as possible. Today, the Santuario Madonna della Corona attracts approximately 40,000 visitors each year, drawn to its stunning location and rich history.
Reaching the sanctuary: A journey of discovery
Getting to the Santuario Madonna della Corona is an adventure in itself. The church’s dramatic location on a vertical cliff face presents a unique challenge for visitors. However, the effort required to reach it is well worth the reward.
Option 1: The easy route from Spiazzi
If you’re traveling from Verona, the easiest way to reach the sanctuary is by car. The quaint town of Spiazzi, located just above the sanctuary, can be reached in about an hour by car. From there, you have two options to reach the sanctuary. You can opt for a 20-minute walk downhill (and uphill on your return journey) or take the convenient shuttle bus. The shuttle bus operates every 30 minutes, with ticket prices of €1.80 for a one-way ride and €3.00 for a roundtrip. The ride on the shuttle bus only takes a few minutes, and the stopping place is just a stone’s throw away from the sanctuary.
Option 2: The Path of Hope
For those seeking a more adventurous route, the Path of Hope, or Pilgrims’ Path, offers a rewarding experience. This path starts in the village of Brentino Belluno, situated at the foot of Monte Baldo. From there, you’ll traverse a winding path that leads you through a forest, climbing around 1,500 steps along the way. The hike takes about two hours, but the stunning views and sense of accomplishment make it well worth the effort.
Public transport options
If you don’t have a car, don’t worry; train and bus options are available. The best bus route is to take bus 173 from Verona Porta Nuova to Caprino Veronese, then catch bus 476 to Spiazzi. Alternatively, you can take the train from Verona Porta Nuova to Peri, then walk to Brentino Belluno and follow the white/red signs with the number 73 to the starting point of the Path of Hope.
Practical information for your visit
The Santuario Madonna della Corona is open daily, with opening hours varying by season. From April to October, it is open from 7:00 to 19:30, and from November to March, it is open from 8:00 to 18:00. Entry to the sanctuary is free, but it is recommended to dress appropriately if you plan on entering the church.
