Discover Northern Lanzarote and La Graciosa: A Day Trip Guide

Lanzarote, a gem in the Canary Islands, is a land of stark contrasts and breathtaking beauty. This island, shaped by the fusion of two volcanic landmasses over millions of years, offers a unique blend of dramatic landscapes and serene beaches. The southern region, with its Timanfaya National Park and Playa Blanca is a popular tourist destination. However, the northern part of the island and the neighboring La Graciosa hold their own enchanting allure.

Embarking on a journey to explore northern Lanzarote and La Graciosa reveals a world of rugged beauty and tranquil shores. From the artistic influences of César Manrique to the picturesque villages and stunning viewpoints, this day trip promises an unforgettable experience.

The Artistic Legacy of César Manrique

Begin your adventure in the capital of Arrecife heading inland towards Teguise. Along the way, you’ll encounter the creative spirit of César Manrique a renowned artist born in Lanzarote in 1919. While his career started as a painter, it was his architectural designs that left an indelible mark on the island. Although a full day could be spent exploring his works, time constraints suggest focusing on the northern landscapes and the charming village of Teguise.

Charming Villages and Panoramic Views

Teguise the island’s former capital, is a must-visit. Known as one of Spain‘s most beautiful towns, it’s perfect for a leisurely stroll and a coffee break. Continue your journey to Haría a village nestled in the “valley of a thousand palm trees.” Here, you’ll find whitewashed streets and a main square that houses an art gallery beneath an old water tank. César Manrique spent his final years in Haría, and his home is now a museum.

The journey to Haría offers stunning panoramic views from the Risco de Famara a near-vertical massif that stretches as far as the eye can see. One of the most breathtaking viewpoints is the Mirador del Río designed by César Manrique. This vantage point offers a sweeping panorama of La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago. Remember, the mirador closes before 5 pm, so plan your visit accordingly.

La Graciosa: A Beach Lover’s Paradise

Arrive in Órzola a laid-back port town in northern Lanzarote, around midday. This gives you time to park and enjoy lunch before boarding the Biosfera Express ferry to La Graciosa. The ferry ride takes approximately 25 minutes to cross El Río the stretch of calm, cerulean water bridging the two islands.

Upon arrival in Caleta de Sebo the main hub of La Graciosa, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a different world. The low-slung settlement, with its whitewashed houses and sandy streets, exudes a beach island escape vibe. Here, you can enjoy a small swimming bay, a beach, and several restaurants. However, to truly experience La Graciosa’s beauty, venture further to explore its stunning beaches.

There are three main ways to get around La Graciosa: on foot, by bike rental, or by jeep. The island’s “roads” are mainly compressed sand and rock, making them easy to navigate. A jeep tour is a great way to explore the northern part of the island, visiting highlights like Pedro BarbaPlaya Lambra and the iconic Arcos de los Caletones. Save the best for last with a visit to Playa de las Conchas one of the most beautiful beaches in Spain.

La Graciosa’s pristine shores and tranquil atmosphere make it a perfect destination for a day trip. Whether you’re exploring the island’s natural beauty or simply relaxing on its beaches, a visit to La Graciosa is an experience you won’t soon forget.
