The initiative is divided into four segments, with the first nearing completion.
Gila River Bridges and Traffic Shifts
One of the most notable achievements is the construction of two new I-10 bridges over the Gila River located approximately 11 miles south of the Phoenix-Chandler border. The eastbound bridge is currently undergoing concrete deck pouring, with completion expected this fall. This new structure will connect to a previously finished section of the eastbound bridge, completed in 2026. The westbound bridge over the Gila River was finalized last year.
Further south, near Casa Grande, ADOT has implemented a traffic shift on a 10-mile stretch from State Route 387 to Gas Line Road. This adjustment allows crews to install concrete barriers in the median, creating a safer workspace for adding a third general-purpose lane in both directions. Additionally, workers are reconstructing the Pinal Avenue and State Route 387 interchange, constructing a new interchange at Seed Farm Road, and widening the Gas Line Road bridge over I-10.
Upcoming Segments and HOV Lanes
By the end of summer, construction will commence on an 11-mile segment near the Phoenix-Chandler line, between the Loop 202 Santan/South Mountain freeways and the Gila River bridges. This phase includes adding a third general-purpose lane in both directions and reconstructing interchanges at Riggs Road, Wild Horse Pass Boulevard, and State Route 347/Queen Creek Road. A new interchange at Koli Road will also be constructed, situated between Wild Horse Pass Boulevard and SR 347.
High-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes will be added in both directions between the Loop 202 Santan/South Mountain freeways and Riggs Road. Upon completion, scheduled for late 2029, the Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project will alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel times through this critical stretch of I-10.
SR 51 Repairs and Lane Closures
In central Phoenix, drivers can expect significant changes on State Route 51 as ADOT undertakes essential repairs. Starting next week, a section of SR 51 will be narrowed to two northbound lanes for seven weeks. This restriction, in place 24/7 between Highland Avenue and Camelback Road, is necessary to replace about 700 feet of pavement damaged by previous drainage system repairs.
ADOT advises drivers to anticipate longer delays during morning and evening rush hours and considers using Interstate 17 as an alternative route. The two right lanes will close for about a month, followed by the left two lanes closing for roughly two to three weeks. Crews will remove part of the concrete pavement, repair the damaged stormwater pipe, and pour new concrete to replace the old, uneven surface.
This roadwork is part of a larger project initiated in March to improve the 9.5-mile stretch between Interstate 10 and Shea Boulevard. The project is expected to continue into the fall, with ongoing efforts to enhance the infrastructure and ensure smoother travel for Phoenix residents.
Weekend Traffic Advisories
To facilitate these improvements, ADOT has scheduled several restrictions and closures over the upcoming weekend. Drivers should be aware of the following:
- Northbound SR 51 will be closed between Bethany Home Road and Northern Avenue from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for pavement improvement. Northbound on-ramps at Thomas Road, Indian School Road, and Colter Street will also be closed. Alternate routes include northbound Interstate 17 or northbound 16th Street to eastbound Northern Avenue.
- Eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) will be closed between Cooper Road and Val Vista Drive from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for widening projects.
