Growing enthusiasm for travel among older adults
As we step into 2025, a significant trend is emerging among Americans aged 50 and above: a renewed eagerness to travel. According to a recent AARP survey, 70% of older adults are planning trips this year, reflecting a rise from 65% in 2024. This enthusiasm is particularly pronounced among those aged 50 to 59, with 73% expressing intentions to travel, compared to 68% of those over 60. The survey indicates a shift towards international travel, with 44% of respondents eyeing destinations outside the United States, up from 37% last year. This trend highlights a growing desire for exploration and adventure among older travelers.
Travel preferences and spending habits
Despite the rising interest in travel, older adults are cautious about their spending. The average anticipated travel expenses for 2025 are estimated at $6,847, a slight increase from the previous year. However, 45% of respondents cite cost as the primary barrier to travel, followed by health concerns (29%) and weather conditions (23%). Interestingly, financial uncertainty due to inflation appears to be less of a deterrent this year, with only 20% of respondents indicating it as a reason for not traveling, down from 24% in 2024. This suggests that while older adults are eager to travel, they are also mindful of their budgets and the financial implications of their plans.
Preferred modes of travel and destinations
When it comes to travel preferences, air travel is gaining popularity among older adults. In 2025, 46% of respondents plan to travel by plane, a notable increase from 38% in 2024. Conversely, road trips are expected to decline, with only 43% indicating a preference for driving, down from 49% last year. Age plays a significant role in travel preferences; those aged 70 and above prefer traveling in their own vehicles (50%), while younger seniors (60-69) lean towards flying (45%). As for destinations, Europe tops the list for international travel, with Italy, Great Britain, and France being the most sought-after countries. Domestically, Florida and California remain popular choices, showcasing the diverse interests of older travelers.
