Tom Holland's Spider-Man Film Becomes Second to Cross $900M Domestic Mark

The 2026 box office is witnessing a historic moment as Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings past the $900 million mark domestically, becoming only the second film to achieve this milestone. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Sadie Sink, this Marvel-Sony collaboration is not just breaking records but redefining them.

The film reached this extraordinary benchmark in just 36 days, surpassing the previous record set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, which took 50 days to achieve the same feat. With an impressive $30.4 million earned in its fifth week, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is on track to become the highest-grossing domestic film ever, potentially dethroning The Force Awakens which holds the current record at $936.6 million.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Record-Breaking Journey

As the summer season draws to a close, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to dominate the box office. The film is projected to earn around $18 million during the Friday to Monday stretch, further cementing its place in cinematic history. The movie’s success can be attributed to its compelling storyline, stellar performances, and the enduring popularity of the Spider-Man franchise.

The film’s journey to the $900 million mark has been nothing short of spectacular. It opened to widespread acclaim and has maintained strong momentum throughout its theatrical run. The combination of Tom Holland’s charismatic portrayal of Peter Parker and the film’s innovative approach to the superhero genre has resonated deeply with audiences.

New Releases Struggle to Compete

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to soar, other new releases are finding it challenging to make a significant impact. Paramount’s By Any Means an R-rated action thriller directed by Elegance Bratton and starring Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, began previews on Thursday. The film, set in the 1960s, follows a young Black FBI agent who teams up with a notorious mafia hitman to investigate a series of brutal killings targeting civil rights leaders.

By Any Means earned $725,000 at 2,350 theaters during its preview screenings. The film is expected to bring in $6 million to $8 million over the four-day Labor Day weekend. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film is targeting the older adult demographic, a strategy that has proven successful in the past for Labor Day releases.

A24’s Onslaught directed by Adam Wingard and starring Adria Arjona, Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, and Drew Starkey, also began previews this week. The R-rated genre film brought in $275,000 and is expected to earn between $5 million and $7 million over the weekend. Onslaught tells the story of an Army sniper who must protect her daughter from a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers.
