After stepping away from the limelight, Jamil spent time touring with her musician boyfriend. However, when her finances dwindled, she found herself in a desperate situation, thinking, “Please can I have a job, any job, I will do anything.” Instead of traditional job offers, she was presented with auditions, including one for a Las Vegas magic show and another for The Good Place. Initially, Jamil was hesitant to pursue acting, feeling it was a departure from her original career goals. “I had never acted before and just thought that was sacrilege,” she admitted.
The power of opportunity
Jamil’s path to the audition was anything but conventional. After pitching a show, industry executives encouraged her to try acting to build her credibility. They suggested, “We want you to go to this audition for Mike Schur. You’ll have more power as a writer if you have a name for yourself, or you can just meet him and maybe he’ll put you in the writer’s room.” This advice proved pivotal, as Jamil ultimately had to choose between the magic show and The Good Place. She opted for acting, a decision that would change her life forever.
Reflecting on success
Looking back on her journey, Jamil attributes her success to a combination of luck and timing. “It’s ridiculous… but I’m having a lovely time and working very hard,” she reflects.
