Osher Lifelong Learning Institute enhances travel offerings

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Southern Oregon University (SOU) has initiated a new travel pilot program aimed at enriching the experiences of its members. This program, launched in 2025, seeks to gauge interest among participants and broaden the variety of trips offered.

Members can anticipate a diverse selection of travel opportunities. These options will include local day trips, regional overnight excursions, and more extensive journeys across the country and internationally. This initiative reflects a commitment to fostering lifelong learning through unique travel experiences, appealing to both novice travelers and seasoned explorers across generations.

Upcoming travel adventures

In the first half of 2025, OLLI at SOU will offer a series of local and regional trips, designed in collaboration with expert tour companies. Members can look forward to exploring the stunning Rogue Valley and its surroundings, each destination providing unique educational and recreational experiences. The initial trips will feature partnerships with Ashland’s Main Street Tours and Collette Travel and Tours, aimed at enriching the travel experience for all participants.

Wines and wineries of Walla Walla

The wines and wineries of Walla Walla excursion is a notable highlight for wine enthusiasts. Scheduled for November 3-7, this trip is led by esteemed instructor Dan Dawson. It includes three informative wine lectures in October, followed by a firsthand exploration of the acclaimed Walla Walla wine region. Participants must make their own travel arrangements to and from the destination. As this trip is fully booked, interested individuals may contact [email protected] to join the waiting list.

Klamath Basin guided birding and wildlife tour

The Klamath Basin guided birding and wildlife tour offers an immersive experience in the natural beauty of Southern Oregon. Scheduled for November 15, this tour is hosted by ROGUETROTTER, a company known for its exceptional bird-watching excursions. Participants will explore picturesque locations such as Lilli Glen and Howard Prairie Lake, which showcase the diverse ecosystems of the region.

This one-day tour caters to both bird enthusiasts and landscape photographers. It departs from the Campbell Center in the early morning and returns in the evening. To secure a spot, reservations must be made online by November 7.

Seasonal excursions and future trips

As the holiday season approaches, OLLI at SOU will host the Shore Acres Holiday Lights and Bandon Coast tour from December 6 to 7. This two-day adventure invites participants to immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere along Oregon’s southern coast. The itinerary includes highlights such as the Bandon History Museum and the enchanting Shore Acres Holiday Lights Show, along with a delightful dinner at 7 Devils Brewing Co. Attendees can also enjoy beachcombing and tide pool exploration, concluding with an overnight stay at the historic Windemere Lodge.

Looking ahead to international travel

For individuals eager to broaden their travel experiences, OLLI at SOU is organizing international trips in the near future. A notable journey titled Exploring South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Botswana is scheduled from August 22 to September 5. This adventure, in partnership with OLLI at Boise State University, will encompass eight thrilling safaris, visits to acclaimed national parks, and authentic local cuisine, including a traditional braai barbeque dinner along the Chobe riverbank.

The itinerary promises an exploration of the stunning Victoria Falls and will culminate in the lively cultural center of Cape Town. Participants are encouraged to secure their reservations by November 23 to benefit from special discounted rates.

Christmas markets and holiday traditions

OLLI at SOU is offering a delightful excursion through the Christmas Markets of the Rhine from November 30 to December 8. This enchanting journey spans Switzerland, Germany, and France, featuring a six-night cruise along the Rhine River. Participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich holiday traditions of Europe. To secure a spot for this magical experience, booking is recommended by December 31.
