The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has announced several ramp closures on Interstate 15 (I-15) and Interstate 215 (I-215) that will affect commuters and travelers in the coming weeks. These closures are part of ongoing projects aimed at improving infrastructure and reducing congestion.
For those planning to drive through Utah County this weekend, be prepared for delays as UDOT will be shutting down key ramps to facilitate essential construction work. The projects include significant upgrades to both highways, with a focus on enhancing travel options and safety.
I-15 Ramp Closures in Utah County
The first set of closures will impact I-15 in Utah County. The southbound ramp to 2100 North (Exit 282) in Lehi will close on Friday, July 31, at 10:00 p.m. reopening on Monday, August 3, at 5:00 a.m.. This closure is necessary for utility work as part of a larger project to build 2.8 miles of new freeway between 2100 North and the Mountain View Corridor.
During this period, a segment of Thanksgiving Way which runs parallel to Exit 282 will also be closed. The new freeway connection aims to provide more options for east-west travel and alleviate congestion on 2100 North. Additionally, the project includes the construction of two pedestrian bridges and nearly two miles of shared-use paths, with plans to realign and rebuild two miles of existing trails to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists. Construction is expected to finish in late 2028.
On Saturday, August 1, at 9:00 p.m. crews will close the off-ramps from I-15 to Center Street (Exit 271) in Orem. This closure will continue until Monday, August 3, at 5:00 a.m.. Center Street between Geneva Road and 800 West will also be closed for paving during the project.
I-215 Ramp Closures in Salt Lake County
In Salt Lake County UDOT is urging motorists to plan ahead for the closure of three key ramps on I-215 which will be shut down for approximately a month starting this week. The ramps connecting northbound I-215 to westbound and eastbound I-80 as well as Redwood Road are slated to close beginning at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28.
The I-80 ramps are expected to remain closed for about five weeks, likely reopening just before Labor Day while the Redwood Road ramp isn’t scheduled to reopen until early October. Travelers seeking to get to the Salt Lake City International Airport are encouraged to take the I-15 to I-80 connection or Bangerter Highway while the ramp to I-80 is closed.
These closures are part of the ongoing I-215 West Improved Project which began last year and hit its halfway point in June 2026. The project involves repaving many sections of I-215 replacing 18 bridge decks, and repairing 12 bridges. The full $190 million project is still on track to be completed in 2027.
John Montoya, a UDOT project manager, emphasized the importance of these maintenance efforts. “Much like a car or a home, a bridge requires different kinds of maintenance throughout its life“, he said. “Staying ahead of that maintenance helps keep our transportation system safe and reliable, and helps us get the most from the infrastructure Utahns have already invested in.”
The closure of the northbound I-215 ramp to the Salt Lake City International Airport will particularly impact travelers, as it will be closed for 35 days. The northbound I-215 to Redwood Road ramp will also be closed starting Tuesday, July 28 until October 2. For travelers headed to the airport, UDOT officials recommended using Bangerter HighwayI-15 or SR-201 as alternate routes.
