Planning your Madagascar adventure
Before starting your itinerary, it’s vital to note that Madagascar’s infrastructure can be lacking, complicating travel compared to other destinations. The roads are often rough, and public transport options are limited, making planning essential. Allocate at least ten days to truly experience the island, not including the lengthy flight to reach it.
Getting there
Most international flights arrive in Antananarivo, Madagascar’s capital. From there, travelers typically venture out to explore various regions. While the flight to Madagascar can be lengthy and somewhat costly, it opens the door to extensive exploration. Airlines such as Air France, Kenyan Airways, and South African Airways offer routes to Antananarivo; however, be prepared for potential delays or cancellations, especially with domestic flights.

Highlights of the journey
One of the most remarkable experiences was visiting the Tsingy Stone Forest, where towering limestone formations create a surreal landscape. It’s an ideal spot for hiking and offers unforgettable views. The journey to this location was lengthy but rewarding, with captivating scenery along the way, including lush rice terraces and unique villages.
Another highlight was the Avenue of the Baobabs, where majestic trees create a stunning spectacle, particularly during sunset. Watching the sun dip below the horizon while surrounded by these ancient giants was a moment I will cherish. In Morondava, I savored local cuisine and engaged with friendly locals, enriching my experience.
Wildlife encounters
Madagascar serves as a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts. At Ranomafana National Park, I encountered various species of lemurs, including the rare golden bamboo lemur. The lush rainforest setting starkly contrasts the arid landscapes I had encountered earlier. The park offers numerous hiking trails, each leading to unique ecosystems teeming with life.
In Andasibe National Park, known for its proximity to the capital, I observed the famed Indri lemur.
