Summer vacation prices in Italy: a closer look

As summer approaches, vacation prices in Italy are soaring. Here's what to expect.

With summer just around the corner, many Italians are gearing up for their annual beach vacations. The allure of sun-soaked beaches, refreshing cocktails, and sandy toes is hard to resist. However, it’s essential to brace yourself for some shocking price hikes this year. According to recent reports, 2025 is set to be one of the most expensive summers in recent memory for beach holidays in Italy.

The price surge explained

The Italian consumer association, Codacons, has highlighted a troubling trend regarding vacation costs. They predict significant increases in expenses, particularly for families looking to enjoy a weeklong getaway in August, around the peak holiday period of Ferragosto. Their findings reveal that accommodation prices have surged by an average of 10% compared to 2024, with some areas seeing increases of up to 20%.

Beach rentals are no exception, with two loungers costing between €30 and €35 per day. In some of the most exclusive locations, daily rental fees could skyrocket to €500. Carlo Rienzi, head of Codacons, describes this phenomenon as a ‘perfect storm,’ where increasing demand from international tourists has exacerbated price hikes. Initially, rising energy costs were blamed, but now the soaring demand is driving prices even higher.

Family vacations becoming a luxury

While Italy remains a favorite among foreign tourists, domestic families are feeling the pinch. The cost of vacations is increasingly becoming a luxury that only a few can afford, leading many families to opt for shorter trips—often just two or three nights—spanning from June to September. This shift reflects a broader trend of prioritizing affordability over traditional week-long vacations.

Regional price differences

When examining beach vacations, certain regions stand out for their costs. Liguria, for instance, is notorious for its high prices, with a week in a three-star hotel in Santa Margherita Ligure costing around €3,592 during peak season. Similarly, Versilia is not far behind, where families can expect to pay approximately €2,237 for a week’s stay.

In Sardinia, a popular spot like Baja Sardinia can exceed €2,680 for a week, while the Amalfi Coast in Campania also hits high marks, with prices starting at €2,264 in Amalfi for a week in August.

More affordable options

Despite the overall price increases, there are still some more affordable destinations that families are gravitating towards. Emilia-Romagna continues to be a beloved choice for both young travelers and families. For example, a week’s stay in Rimini for a family of four costs around €1,030, and in Riccione, it’s about €1,498.

Puglia also offers attractive pricing for families; in Vieste, a week costs roughly €1,182, while Gallipoli is around €1,445, and Otranto is slightly less at €1,351. On the Tyrrhenian coast, Anzio stands out with an average price of €1,373, and Lido di Camaiore offers a stay for approximately €1,614. These prices, while still significant, are considerably lower than the top-tier destinations, providing equally stunning views and enjoyable beach experiences.

As the summer season approaches, travelers are advised to plan accordingly, balancing their desire for sun and sea with budget considerations. With prices on the rise, exploring lesser-known coastal gems may just be the perfect solution for a memorable yet affordable family vacation.
