Having journeyed around the globe multiple times, I have gathered numerous remarkable moments that have enriched my understanding of the world. Although I never compiled a formal bucket list, I have been fortunate to encounter many unexpected adventures. In the spirit of exploration, I will share some of my most unforgettable travel experiences, arranged as if traversing from the United States eastward around the globe.
Iconic coastal journeys
Driving down the legendary Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) from San Francisco to Los Angeles offers an unparalleled experience. This iconic route follows the California coastline, showcasing breathtaking sights like Monterey, Big Sur, and Santa Barbara.
After a day in San Francisco, the journey along the PCH began, with a destination set for Big Sur. This stunning 90-mile stretch features a wild, unspoiled coastline and dramatic views. A night spent in Monterey was highlighted by an early morning drive along the 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach, famous for its prestigious golf courses. The next evening included a stay at a beachfront hotel in Santa Barbara, followed by a hike in Malibu.
Upon reaching Los Angeles, the trip concluded with a visit to the Santa Monica Pier. While it may not be the most exotic destination, this road trip embodies the nostalgic charm of Americana, making it a memorable journey for travelers of all ages.
Swimming with dolphins
Many people dream of swimming with dolphins, seeking an experience that respects these intelligent creatures. A visit to Central America provided the perfect opportunity through the Dolphin-Trainer-for-a-Day program at Anthony’s Key Resort in Roatan. This program embodies a commitment to ethical wildlife interactions.
At Anthony’s Key Resort, more than two dozen Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins inhabit a natural lagoon, allowing them to swim freely. Throughout the day, I worked alongside a trainer named Christine, engaging with these lively dolphins. My responsibilities included preparing their meals, assisting with health checks, and enjoying playful interactions, all of which showcased the dolphins’ unique personalities.
The dolphins at this facility are not confined; they have the choice to engage or swim away, ensuring each interaction feels meaningful. This experience highlighted the importance of ethical wildlife tourism and left a lasting impression on my perspective of animal interactions.
Cultural encounters in San Blas
Reaching the San Blas Islands presents challenges, yet the rewards are significant. This collection of 365 picturesque islands, each lined with palm-fringed beaches, is best explored by chartering a sailboat. However, the true treasures of these islands are the Kuna people, whose vibrant culture and hospitality offer a memorable experience.
While sailing with a companion, we anchored at one of the Kuna islands. During our visit, we were warmly welcomed by a local family. As we toured their island, a woman eagerly gestured towards my camera, keen to see an image of her family. After taking several photographs, their faces lit up with joy as they viewed themselves on the camera’s screen—a moment filled with delight and appreciation.
Recognizing the profound impact of capturing their happiness, I wished I could print the photos on the spot. Fortunately, our captain later printed them, and the family was overjoyed to receive their portraits. This exchange served as a poignant reminder of the connections that travel can create.
Adventurous explorations in the Galapagos
The Galapagos Islands are a premier destination for many travelers. While cruises offer popular exploration options, land-based tours can provide equally enriching experiences. On San Cristobal Island, I participated in a snorkeling excursion that showcased the vibrant marine life of the archipelago.
Swimming in the crystal-clear waters, I encountered curious sea turtles and playful sea lions. Their natural inquisitiveness created exhilarating moments.
