Hyde Park Square redevelopment sparks community concerns

Local businesses fear redevelopment will harm the character of Hyde Park Square.

The potential redevelopment of Hyde Park Square has ignited a wave of concern among local business owners and residents. PLK Communities, the developer behind the project, seeks to construct a nearly 80-foot structure in an area traditionally limited to 50 feet. This ambitious plan has raised alarms about the future of the neighborhood, which prides itself on its small business community.

Community voices against the redevelopment

Longtime business owner Kristen Folzenlogen, who has operated a stationary shop in the area for 25 years, is among those voicing strong opposition. “We don’t want to be too dense,” she stated, highlighting fears of increased traffic and parking issues that could arise from such a significant development. Many locals share her concerns, questioning whether the promised benefits, such as new hotels and apartments, will truly enhance the neighborhood or simply lead to its commercialization.

Impact on small businesses

Folzenlogen expressed her frustration with the developer’s assertion that the project aims to support small businesses. “I take personal offense to that,” she remarked, emphasizing that her business is thriving alongside many others in the area. She noted that 10 small businesses have already been displaced due to previous developments, raising fears that this trend could continue if the current plans are approved.

The zoning debate

Residents like Jennifer Millman argue that the zoning laws are in place for a reason, and changing them could set a dangerous precedent for other neighborhoods. “Once this happens here, this can happen in all those other neighborhoods because the precedent has been set,” she warned. The community is rallying together, with signs displayed throughout Hyde Park, signaling a strong movement against the proposed changes. As the city council prepares to review the plans, the voices of concerned residents and business owners are growing louder, advocating for the preservation of their beloved neighborhood.
