Fairfield graduation ceremony marred by fatal shooting

What should have been a night of celebration and joy turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy at the Fairfield High School graduation ceremony for the Class of 2026. The event, held on Friday, was relocated to the Armijo High School campus following a devastating shooting that occurred just two days prior at Sem Yeto Continuation High School’s graduation ceremony.

The incident, which took place at approximately 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday in the Fairfield High School parking lot, left an 18-year-old student dead and three others injured, including an 11-year-old child. The community is now grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence.

The shooting and its immediate aftermath

The shooting occurred as graduating students were exiting the stadium and meeting their families. Among the injured were a 25-year-old, a 20-year-old, and the 11-year-old child, who was later identified as the sibling of the victim. The Fairfield Police Department has stated that there is no ongoing threat to the community but has not yet commented on the suspect or suspects involved.

Pastor Sam Morris of BayNorth Church of Christ shared his personal connection to the tragedy, revealing that the victim was a relative of his wife. He recounted the harrowing details of the incident, including the victim’s mother attempting to save her son by administering CPR and tending to her injured daughter.

A community in mourning

In the wake of the tragedy, the community has come together to support the victim’s family and honor the young life lost. Chalk art and messages of love adorned the pavement outside Sem Yeto Continuation High School’s satellite campus at Armijo High School. Fellow students and staff created a small altar with flowers and a jar full of messages and memories to pay tribute to the victim.

Pastor Morris is working with the City of Fairfield and other faith leaders to plan a community vigil on Friday, June 12, in support of the family and to remember the 18-year-old graduate. He emphasized the importance of building relationships and understanding one another to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

The investigation and community response

The Fairfield Police Department has called on the community to help with the investigation by sharing any cell phone video, photos, surveillance camera footage, tips, and other information. Detectives are currently identifying and interviewing witnesses and are actively following up on investigative leads.

The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District has expressed its condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the individuals affected.” The district has also acknowledged that police officers were not stationed at Wednesday’s graduation because the proper request channels were not followed.

As the community continues to heal, the tragic events of that night serve as a stark reminder of the importance of unity, understanding, and the preciousness of life.
