A family from the United States, including three boys aged 10, 8, and 5, recently explored this remarkable region during their trip to China. They sought to experience the scenic allure of Zhangjiajie, a destination long on their travel wishlist.

During their five-day stay, the family chose to experience three different hotels to minimize travel time to key attractions. This strategic choice allowed them to visit important sites without the burden of transporting their luggage. Their itinerary featured the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, and the majestic Tianmen Mountain.
Experiencing Wulingyuan
Their adventure began at the Manyuan Resort Hotel, conveniently located near the Wulingyuan Scenic Area. After arriving at Hehua International Airport and enjoying a brief transfer, they settled into a hotel room overlooking the Suo Xi River. The hotel provided amenities that delighted the children, including a play tent and a slide, while the parents appreciated the prospect of relaxing in a hot tub after a day of exploration.
Wulingyuan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, is renowned for its towering quartzite sandstone pillars. Among its attractions is the Hallelujah Mountain, which inspired visuals in the film Avatar. Chinese authorities have effectively managed visitor flow, offering accessible pathways and elevators. However, families with young children may find baby carriers more practical than strollers on certain terrains. Visiting during the off-peak season allowed them to enjoy shorter wait times for shuttle buses and attractions.
The thrill of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon
The family then headed to the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, where adrenaline-seekers could truly thrive. The centerpiece of the canyon is the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge, offering breathtaking views of the gorge below. The children ran across the bridge, undeterred by the steep drop, even spotting bungee jumpers from above. Their ticket package included various activities, but the glass bridge experience stood out as unforgettable.
After crossing, they descended into the canyon via a slideway, a unique and enjoyable way to reach the valley floor. A leisurely walk along the gorge allowed them to take in the stunning scenery of cascading waters and lush greenery. Ascending Tianmen Mountain
For the final part of their adventure, the family checked into the Hampton by Hilton Zhangjiajie Tianmen Mountain, located near the cableway station. The cableway ride to Tianmen Mountain is known for its spectacular views. Although maintenance work shortened their ride time, it still offered impressive panoramas.
Adventuring on Tianmen Mountain
The ascent included a thrilling shuttle bus ride along the winding Avenue Toward Heaven, known for its 66 bends. Upon reaching the summit, they encountered the world’s highest natural karst arch, Tianmen Cave, a breathtaking sight. Inspired by his enthusiasm, the eldest son led the family in a challenge to ascend the 999-step Sky Ladder.
Upon reaching the top, their adventure continued with a scenic cable car ride to Yunmeng Fairy Peak, the highest point of Tianmen Mountain. The view from this vantage point showcased the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
