Exploring Switzerland's Scenic Trains and Alpine Beauty

Switzerland, with its stunning alpine landscapes and world-renowned panoramic trains has always been a dream destination for many. For Kara, her partner, and her mom, this dream became a reality in late March 2026. Their journey was meticulously planned to include active sightseeing days and a stop in the picturesque town of Lugano.

Their adventure began with a desire to experience the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express two of Switzerland’s most famous train journeys. However, with seats on both sold out, their travel planner, Annika, had to get creative. Through quick thinking and adjustments, she managed to turn potential setbacks into opportunities, ensuring that Kara’s family could still enjoy the best of what Switzerland has to offer.

The Journey Begins: Zurich to St. Moritz

On the first day of their trip, the family traveled from Zurich Airport to St. Moritz. To make the journey unique, Annika suggested a scenic route via Zernez, providing a different experience from the upcoming Glacier Express ride. The afternoon offered two exciting options: a mountain trip to Corvatsch or a scenic bus ride to Maloja. The bus ride along the lakes of the Upper Engadine was a beautiful alternative to the Bernina Express bus trip that had to be removed from the itinerary.

Bernina Express Day Trip: St. Moritz to Tirano

The second day was dedicated to the Bernina Express day trip from St. Moritz to Tirano. The morning started with regional trains and side trips, including a spectacular mountain trip to Diavolezza and a relaxed lunch at Alp Grüm. The afternoon featured the highlight of the day: the Bernina Express ride back to St. Moritz. This was the only official panoramic train available with three seats together, allowing the family to enjoy the stunning views they had hoped for.

Glacier Express to Zermatt

The third day was all about the full Glacier Express ride to Zermatt. Although they couldn’t secure seats in the Excellence Class, first class provided a great alternative. Annika added a personalized 3-course lunch on the Glacier Express, taking Kara’s dietary wishes into account, making the journey even more special.

Gornergrat and Return to Zurich

On the fourth day, the family took a quick and easy excursion from Zermatt to the Gornergrat cogwheel trip, offering stunning views of the Matterhorn. In the afternoon, they traveled back to Zurich via the scenic Lötschberg Mountain Train among other options. The final day was spent sightseeing in Zurich before their late-afternoon flight, with options like a train ride to the Uetliberg viewpoint.

The family’s trip was a resounding success, thanks to the meticulous planning and attention to detail provided by Annika. Their journey through Switzerland’s breathtaking landscapes and iconic train rides created memories that will last a lifetime. For anyone planning a trip to Switzerland, the expertise and personalized service offered by travel planners like Annika can make all the difference in creating an unforgettable experience.
