Gary Barlow, the renowned singer and songwriter, has found a new passion that rivals his love for music: wine. The 55-year-old Take That star has embarked on an epic adventure across New Zealand exploring the country’s vibrant wine and food scene alongside comedian Jason Manford. Their journey is captured in the new series, Gary Barlow’s Food And Wine Tour: New Zealand which promises to take viewers on a delightful culinary and vinicultural exploration.
The series is the latest in Barlow’s growing portfolio of food and travel television programs. In this six-part series, Barlow and Manford traverse the stunning landscapes of New Zealand, from the bustling city of Auckland to the serene vineyards of Waiheke Island, Queenstown, Central Otago, Marlborough Sounds, and Hawke’s Bay. They immerse themselves in the local culture, experiencing Maori traditions and taking on thrilling challenges like zip-lining through native forests and tandem cycling through vineyards.
Gary Barlow’s Passion for Wine
Barlow’s enthusiasm for wine is palpable. In an interview with the Press Association, he explained that his love for wine is akin to his passion for music. Wine is like a passion he said, noting that the dedication and love winemakers have for their craft resonate deeply with him. Whenever you go to these vineyards, they’re not there for the money. They’re there because they love it.
The singer described his shows as being first and foremost, about the wine with food serving as the perfect pairing. He is particularly drawn to homegrown products and the stories behind them. Anything that’s homegrown is what attracts me Barlow shared, highlighting his appreciation for the authenticity and personal touch that local producers bring to their craft.
A Perfect Travel Companion
For this adventure, Barlow chose Jason Manford as his travel companion. The two have known each other for about 15 years, but their shared experience in New Zealand brought them closer. Barlow found Manford’s lack of wine knowledge to be an advantage, as it allowed the audience to learn alongside him. Perfect, because then he can learn while the audience are watching. That’s the best thing.
Their two-week filming experience was described as really sweet and very special by Barlow. Off-camera, they enjoyed meals together, further cementing their friendship. Manford, who described the experience as one of the biggest privileges of my life was equally enthusiastic about their journey. The duo’s chemistry and shared enjoyment shine through in the series, making it a delightful watch for viewers.
Exploring New Zealand’s Culinary Landscape
The series offers a comprehensive look at New Zealand’s diverse culinary landscape. Barlow and Manford visit a variety of locations, each offering unique experiences. From the vibrant food scene in Auckland to the tranquil vineyards of Waiheke Island, the series showcases the best of what New Zealand has to offer.
In Queenstown, they explore the adventure capital of the world, taking on thrilling activities like zip-lining. Central Otago’s stunning landscapes and Marlborough Sounds’ serene beauty provide a picturesque backdrop for their wine-tasting adventures. Hawke’s Bay, known for its art deco architecture and rich wine culture, is another highlight of their journey.
Barlow and Manford also immerse themselves in Maori traditions, gaining a deeper understanding of the country’s rich cultural heritage. Their experiences with local communities and producers highlight the deep connection between food, wine, and the natural world.
The series is a follow-up to Barlow’s previous food and wine tours, including Gary Barlow’s Wine Tour: South Africa in 2026 and Gary Barlow’s Food And Wine Tour: Australia which aired last year. Each series has allowed Barlow to share his passion for wine and food with a global audience, showcasing the unique cultures and landscapes of the countries he visits.
Gary Barlow’s Food And Wine Tour: New Zealand will air on Sunday, August 30, on ITV. Viewers can look forward to a delightful journey through one of the world’s most beautiful countries, guided by two charismatic hosts who share a genuine love for wine, food, and adventure.
