As a queer journalist, I’ve had the privilege of exploring vibrant LGBTQ+ communities across the United States. Over the past six months, my travels have focused on promoting American Teenager, a nonfiction book that delves into the lives of trans youth in several states. Part of this journey has revealed the thriving queer culture in so-called ‘red states,’ where LGBTQ+ individuals are building rich and fulfilling lives against the odds. Currently, many states impose restrictions on where trans individuals can use the restroom and on gender-affirming care for minors. Yet, the resilience of LGBTQ+ communities in these areas is astounding, as they continue to create joy and support for one another.
Celebrating Queer Spaces Across the U.S.
In honor of those who live unapologetically during these challenging political times, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite queer locales from my travels. These spots range from restaurants and bars to indie bookstores and community centers, all providing safe havens for LGBTQ+ individuals. Particularly vital are the destinations aimed at queer youth, such as summer camps and youth centers, which are crucial for empowerment and support.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to experience Palm Springs nestled in the Ozarks, look no further than Eureka Springs, Arkansas. This charming town, with a population of just over 2,100, was initially developed as a resort destination in the late 1800s before becoming a refuge for hippies and nonconformists in the 1970s. Many of these residents were LGBTQ+, establishing Eureka Springs as one of the most queer-friendly towns in the country. Visitors can explore attractions like the iconic haunted hotel and an array of quirky shops selling every possible flavor of taffy.
From participating in amateur drag contests to enjoying a lively zombie pub crawl during Halloween, Eureka Springs is packed with activities. Take a moment to simply sit back, people-watch, and soak in the town’s beautiful limestone streets. This destination offers more than just a visit; it provides a unique and vibrant atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.
Anchorage’s Mad Myrna’s
In the northernmost reaches of the United States lies Mad Myrna’s, a quintessential gay bar in Anchorage, Alaska, that serves as a social hub for the local queer community. This bar is more than just a nightlife spot; it functions as a community center for a city of 280,000 residents. Known for its lively karaoke nights and engaging drag shows, Mad Myrna’s also hosts organizing meetings for local LGBTQ+ advocacy efforts, making it a cornerstone of the community.
The bar embraces its slogan of being “fabulous and a little mad,” but it offers something even more profound: a sense of belonging for anyone who walks through its doors.
Stonewall National Museum and Archives
Visibility is vital, especially in today’s political climate. The Stonewall National Museum and Archives in Florida educates visitors about LGBTQ+ history and culture. Named after the historic 1969 uprising, the museum hosts exhibitions covering vital topics like the Black LGBTQ+ experience and significant figures such as Edie Windsor, who played a key role in LGBTQ+ rights. Upcoming exhibits aim to shed light on the legacy of civil rights leaders like Bayard Rustin and the contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals in sports.
As political efforts aim to suppress LGBTQ+ history in educational settings, the museum stands as a beacon of resistance, ensuring that vital narratives are preserved and shared.
Magic City Acceptance Center
In Birmingham, Alabama, the Magic City Acceptance Center (MCAC) plays a critical role in supporting LGBTQ+ youth. Since opening in 2014, MCAC has expanded its programming to create a safe and welcoming environment for young individuals. The center provides a drop-in space and has launched a Discord server to reach LGBTQ+ youth across Alabama’s many counties.
Additionally, MCAC is affiliated with the Magic City Acceptance Academy, the only LGBTQ+ affirming school in the Southern U.S., which is currently facing threats to its future. The center’s work is essential in offering support and resources to youth who may not have a safe space elsewhere.
The Appalachian Queer Youth Summit
For those longing for a supportive environment, the Appalachian Queer Youth Summit (AQYS) offers an unforgettable summer camp experience. Set in the stunning wilderness of West Virginia, this annual event is designed for LGBTQ+ youth aged 15 to 19. Campers engage in activities like canoeing and campfire sing-alongs while also participating in advocacy workshops aimed at nurturing the next generation of queer leaders.
Past initiatives have included local campaigns to ban conversion therapy and provide essential supplies for trans youth, showcasing the campers’ commitment to instigating positive change in their communities.

As the lesbian nightlife scene experiences a resurgence, Oklahoma proves to be a surprising hub for queer women. Despite losing some venues in recent years, bars like Frankie’s in Oklahoma City and Yellow Brick Road Pub in Tulsa offer vibrant spaces for socializing and community-building.
For those seeking unique dining experiences, JenChan’s in Atlanta is a must-visit. With an eclectic menu that combines various culinary traditions, the restaurant also offers a “Gay Card” for special promotions throughout the year.
The Little Gay Shop in Austin stands out for its intimate atmosphere and robust collection of LGBTQ+ literature, making it a perfect stop for book lovers. With engaging events and a welcoming vibe, it’s a delightful space for all.
Lastly, no list of LGBTQ+ destinations would be complete without Hamburger Mary’s, a family-friendly restaurant known for its drag-themed burgers and community spirit. Though its locations are dwindling, each venue provides a unique dining experience that celebrates queer culture.
These destinations highlight the resilience and creativity of LGBTQ+ communities in red states, reminding us that joy and pride can flourish even in the most challenging environments.
