Explore Unique Dining and Cultural Experiences in East Central Illinois

Embark on a Culinary and Historical Adventure in East Central Illinois: Discover Local Cuisine and Rich Heritage.

Exploring new places with a friend can be a refreshing experience. Recently, I joined Annie Jansen on an adventure through the scenic landscapes of East Central Illinois. Our goal was to scout unique dining spots for my upcoming book, Unique Eats & Eateries of Illinois, co-authored with Carrie Steinweg.

We met at Annie’s home in Sigel around ten in the morning, and our journey commenced. I encountered some delays due to slow-moving trucks and navigational errors, but Annie was ready and eager to start our day.

Catching up and enjoying the journey

As we drove, my husband later asked about our conversation topics. Truthfully, a better question might be what we didn’t discuss. Previous get-togethers had been cut short, leaving us with stories and experiences to share.

Our route took us through three counties, showcasing stunning courthouses rich in history. I usually enjoy pausing to explore these architectural gems, which often feature magnificent rotundas and intricate ceilings. However, this time, we admired their beauty from the car.

Art in the form of murals

Continuing our journey, I was drawn to local murals. These vibrant artworks encapsulate the region’s essence and tell captivating stories. In Robinson, a lively town, we encountered a particularly striking mural that caught my eye.

Delicious dining adventures

No exploration is complete without indulging in local cuisine, and our first stop did not disappoint. We visited Moonshine, a charming general store in a remote area, known for its delicious bacon cheeseburger, ranked among the top 25 in Illinois. Our friendly server, Lisa, ensured we enjoyed every bite of this popular dish.

Next, we headed to the Heath Museum, a delightful blend of candy, ice cream, and historical exhibits. If you’re seeking Valentine’s Day treats, this spot is definitely worth a visit.

Our culinary journey culminated at the Maxwell House Cafe in Flat Rock. We were warmly welcomed by Hilary, Ron, and Vanessa, who graciously posed for a photo after our interview. We savored an assortment of pie, stir-fry, and their renowned french fries.

Building connections and cherishing memories

Working on this book has been a fulfilling experience, enriched by the wonderful individuals I’ve met and the hidden treasures we’ve discovered. For instance, Annie once introduced her sister to Shelly’s Burger Station in Vandalia, which became one of our memorable stops on this culinary road trip.

Reflecting on our excursion, I find myself wondering about your last day out. What was the highlight for you? For me, it was the joyous conversations that led us to miss turns, filled with laughter, and then backtracking to marvel at sights just a couple of hours away.
