Ever felt that pull to just escape the mundane and dive into the captivating embrace of nature? Well, this May, the Italian landscape is calling your name! As part of the World Biodiversity Day celebrations, the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) has organized a series of events designed to immerse you in Italy’s rich natural heritage. Imagine wandering through ancient salt pans, exploring lush gardens, and discovering hidden gems—all while learning about the delicate balance of our ecosystem. Trust me, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.
FAI’s biodiversity walks: a weekend to remember
The “Camminate nella biodiversità” campaign is set to unfold over two weekends—May 18-19 and May 25-26, 2025. These events will allow you to get up close and personal with biodiversity, shedding light on the intricate relationships that bind us to nature. Each event offers a unique glimpse into different ecosystems, and as you explore, you’ll start to appreciate how every species, big or small, plays a critical role in maintaining the health of our planet.
For instance, the Saline Conti Vecchi in Assemini, Sardinia, is a stunning location that spans around 2,700 hectares. Here, the harmony between human ingenuity and nature has thrived for nearly a century. During the biodiversity weekend, you can join a guided train tour led by Silvia Zoccheddu, a dedicated volunteer from LIPU, where you’ll discover the rich flora and fauna that inhabit this unique wetland. I remember the first time I visited a salt pan; the vibrant colors and sounds of nature were absolutely mesmerizing!
Guided tours and special activities
Need more convincing? On Sunday, May 18, the Castello di Avio opens its doors for guided hikes along its ancient walls, allowing you to connect with the surrounding natural environment. Goethe once referred to this area as the “garden of Europe” due to its remarkable biodiversity and wild herbs. You’ll have the chance to deepen your understanding of the local flora and fauna, both within and outside the castle walls. The guided tours are scheduled at 10:30 AM and 3:30 PM, with free entry for FAI members.
But that’s not all! If you crave a truly immersive experience, then head over to the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. Here, you can participate in the event titled “Risveglio alla Kolymbethra,” where instructor Annalisa Criscenzo will guide you through sensory awakening practices. Picture this: surrounded by the sounds of chirping birds and croaking frogs, you’ll learn about the incredible botanical species that thrive in the garden, culminating in a delightful tasting of homemade citrus jams. Sounds tempting, right?
The heart of biodiversity at Masino Castle
On May 25, the Masino Castle and Park will host a series of activities dedicated to celebrating biodiversity. Join a short hike through the park and participate in a creative workshop focused on bees. Professor Fulvio Piccinino will share fascinating insights into the evolution of the human-bee relationship, the challenges faced by beekeepers, and the importance of pollinators in our ecosystems. Who knew a day out could be so educational and delicious? You’ll even get to taste local honey produced by a nearby farm. What better way to support local biodiversity than through your taste buds?
As you wander through the park, the stunning landscape will make you feel alive and connected to nature. Plus, you’ll have the chance to explore the castle’s historic interiors and labyrinth, creating an unforgettable experience for both the mind and senses.
The World Biodiversity Day is the perfect opportunity to explore some of FAI’s most captivating properties. On May 25, join a stroll through the lush vineyards of Villa dei Vescovi. You’ll uncover the secrets behind the natural wines produced from grapes cultivated in this beautiful setting. Did you know that among the vines, you’ll also find fruit trees growing harmoniously? It’s just one more example of how biodiversity enriches our lives.
At the end of the walk, don’t miss the chance to visit the apiary and learn firsthand from the beekeepers about their vital work in protecting these essential pollinators. There’s something special about connecting with nature and understanding the critical roles that each species plays. If you’re traveling with family, kids will enjoy a fun treasure hunt organized just for them!
Whether you’re an experienced nature enthusiast or just someone looking for a weekend getaway, these biodiversity events promise to be enriching and inspiring. Grab your friends, pack a picnic, and set out on a journey through Italy’s hidden natural wonders. After all, as many know, the best memories are often made outdoors!
