The airshow, hosted at the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport will run on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9. The excitement begins earlier in the week, with the first Thunderbirds aircraft arriving on Tuesday, August 5 at 1:00 PM ET. Aviation enthusiasts can catch a free seven-ship aerial flyover at 2:15 PM ET, marking the official start of the airshow festivities.
The Stars of the Show
The USAF Thunderbirds the Air Force’s premier aerial demonstration team, will take center stage. Known for their formation flying and solo routines the Thunderbirds will showcase the capabilities of the F-16 Falcon a supersonic multi-role fighter jet. Their performance is a blend of artistry and military precision pushing the limits of what these aircraft can do.
Another highlight is the F-35B Jump Jet a fifth-generation stealth fighter with short takeoff and vertical landing capabilities. Planning Your Visit
Gates open at 9:30 AM both days, with flying demonstrations beginning around 10:30 AM and concluding between 3:30 PM and 4:00 PM. Tickets are available at the official airshow website, with options for general admission, reserved seating, and VIP Flight Deck experiences. Children aged 12 and under are admitted free with a ticketed adult.
Parking is not included with general admission or reserved seating tickets and must be purchased separately. The primary overflow option is the Rochester Institute of Technology’s campus, where a shuttle runs to and from the show for $25 per car. The last shuttle from RIT to the show departs at 2:15 PM ET, with return shuttles available until 5:30 PM ET.
Navigating the Airshow
Travelers booked on flights this weekend should plan ahead. While most commercial flights have been rescheduled to earlier or later in the day, some flights will still operate during the airshow. The air boss controlling the airspace will coordinate with air traffic control to allow flights to depart during brief downtimes.
Road closures will be in effect on Scottsville, Behan Road and Paul Road at certain times. If you’re coming to the airport for a flight on Brooks Avenue you should not encounter significant delays. However, it’s advisable to allocate extra time for travel due to potential heavier traffic.
Important Restrictions
All drone operators planning to be in the area of the show must be aware of temporary flight restrictions. Drones are prohibited within five and a half nautical miles of the airshow during the following times:
- Tuesday, August 5 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM ET
- Friday–Sunday, August 7–9 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM ET
