Experience Federico II's Legacy at Castello di Lagopesole in 2026

Nestled in the heart of Basilicata, the medieval Castello di Lagopesole stands as a testament to the region’s rich history and cultural heritage. Perched atop a hill at 820 meters above sea level, this fortress offers panoramic views of the Ofanto and Bradano valleys, making it a perfect setting for a unique summer event in 2026.

From 30 June 2026 through the summer, the castle transforms into an open-air stage for an immersive artistic installation dedicated to the legendary Federico II di Svevia known as the Stupor Mundi or Wonder of the World. This extraordinary experience blends history, art, and cutting-edge technology to bring the past to life.

The Immersive Experience: Federico II – Stupor Mundi

The installation, titled Federico II – Stupor Mundi is the brainchild of acclaimed Lucanian director Nicola Ragone who has won the Nastro d’Argento for his work. This project is part of the broader initiative Fantastico Medioevo promoted by the Presidenza della Giunta della Basilicata and coordinated by the Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019.

Spanning approximately 25 minutes, the experience weaves together videomappinglight art and soundscapes to create a narrative that intertwines historical events with the personal life of Federico II. The castle’s facade becomes a canvas for projections, while ambient sounds and narrations guide visitors through a journey that explores the emperor’s multifaceted persona—ruler, cultural icon, and bridge between East and West.

A standout feature of the installation is the portrayal of Bianca Lancia played by the talented actress Isabella Ragonese. Her character offers a poignant glimpse into the more intimate and human side of Federico II, adding depth to the historical narrative.

A Historical Gem: The Castello di Lagopesole

The Castello di Lagopesole, originally a Norman stronghold, was expanded by Federico II in 1242, becoming a key landmark in the Vitalba valley. The castle’s imposing structure, built from sandstone, features grand halls adorned with ancient sculpted brackets and arches. Its strategic location and historical significance make it a must-visit destination in Basilicata.

One of the castle’s most captivating treasures is the Cappella Palatina a masterpiece of Romanesque art. This sacred space is adorned with well-preserved frescoes and intricate decorations that narrate religious and chivalric tales, offering visitors a sense of the spiritual and artistic richness of Federico II’s era.

The castle is managed by the Musei e parchi archeologici di Melfi e Venosa ensuring its preservation and accessibility to the public. The recent restoration work has further enhanced its allure, making it an ideal venue for the immersive installation.

Event Details and Highlights

The installation will be available for viewing every Saturday evening from 30 June 2026 to 29 starting at 20:30. Admission is free, but visitors are encouraged to book their spots through the castle’s official website to secure their place in this unforgettable experience.

In addition to the immersive installation, the event Visioni di Stupor Mundi will kick off the festivities on 30 June 2026 in the castle’s grand courtyard. This inaugural event is a collaborative effort between the Musei e Parchi Archeologici di Melfi e Venosa the Regione Basilicata and the Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019 with support from the Direzione Generale Musei del Ministero della Cultura.

The installation is a testament to the creative vision of director Nicola Ragone who has collaborated with a team of talented artists, including Andrea Di Consoli for the texts, Carmine Iuvone for the original music, and Studio Cliché for the illustrations and animations. Their collective efforts have resulted in a captivating experience that seamlessly blends historical narrative with contemporary art forms.

As part of the broader Fantastico Medioevo project, the installation aims to celebrate the medieval heritage of Basilicata while engaging visitors in a unique and interactive way. The project’s historical consultant, Prof. Fulvio Delle Donne from the University of Naples Federico II, has provided valuable insights to ensure the accuracy and depth of the narrative.

This summer, the Castello di Lagopesole invites you to step back in time and immerse yourself in the world of Federico II di Svevia. Whether you are a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply seeking a memorable experience, this event promises to be a highlight of your summer in Basilicata.
