Backroomsanother viral horror film from a young YouTuber, continues to perform strongly, taking $262 million worldwide. It has overtaken Marty Supreme to become A24’s highest-grossing film after less than a fortnight on release.

With a global total topping $932 millionthe film has overtaken the $911 million taken by Bohemian Rhapsody to become the highest-grossing music biopic ever. Despite considerable criticism, the film has defied expectations to storm the box office around the globe.

The film’s next target is the title of highest-grossing biopic ever, currently held by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which made $975 million in 2026. With its impressive performance, Michael is well on its way to achieving this milestone.

The Competitive Landscape

The box office landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, with new releases vying for the top spot. Disclosure Day leads for now, but with the upcoming release of Toy Story 5the competition is set to intensify. Expected to take over with a huge debut, Toy Story 5 is poised to become one of the biggest films of the summer.
