Nebraska residents are in for a weather rollercoaster this week. After a refreshing break from the summer heat, a dangerous heatwave is set to descend upon the state this weekend. The shift from pleasant, cool evenings to oppressive heat will be dramatic, requiring residents to stay vigilant and prepared.
The week begins with a welcome respite from the scorching temperatures. Tonight, temperatures will dip into the upper 60s to mid 70s providing ideal conditions for rest and relaxation. However, a slight haze from Canadian wildfires may linger, adding a touch of mystery to the otherwise clear skies.
Midweek Rainfall and Cooler Temperatures
Wednesday marks the arrival of a significant weather change as rain sweeps across the state from west to east. In the Lincoln area, the best chances for rain will occur from late morning through mid-afternoon, with rainfall amounts ranging from 0.25 to 0.50 inches. The day will start with partly cloudy skies, transitioning to generally overcast conditions by afternoon, with possible breaks in the cloud cover by evening.
Temperatures will remain unseasonably cool topping out in the 60s and 70s for most areas, with some locations in the far west and southwest reaching the 80s. The cooler temperatures and light rain will make for a refreshing change from the recent heat.
Additional Rainfall and Cooler Days
Additional waves of rain will move through the state from Wednesday night into Thursday morning and again from Thursday night into Friday morning. While there will be breaks between these rain periods, heavier rainfall is possible at times due to an unusually moist atmosphere. Cooler temperatures will persist through Friday, with highs remaining in the 70s to low 80s on Thursday.
A warm front will begin to push across the state into Friday, bringing hot weather back to western Nebraska with temperatures warming into the low 90s to low 100s. Central and eastern Nebraska will also warm up, but only reaching the upper 70s to mid 80s.
The Weekend Heatwave: A Dramatic Shift
The forecast takes a dramatic turn as the weekend approaches. Heat and humidity will return to Nebraska in earnest starting Saturday, with temperatures surging into the 90s to lower 100s across the area. This dangerous pattern will intensify on Sunday and Monday, with statewide temperatures potentially reaching the lower 100s and heat index values approaching 105 degrees or more.
Sultry conditions will continue into Tuesday, though temperatures may be slightly cooler. Little to no rain is expected from the weekend through early next week as high pressure builds over the region and the main storm track shifts north of Nebraska.
