Box Office Update: Toy Story 5 Triumphs, Supergirl Underperforms

The box office landscape has seen some dramatic shifts this weekend, with Toy Story 5 continuing its reign and Supergirl facing significant challenges. The latest numbers reveal a stark contrast in performance, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the film industry.

As the summer blockbuster season heats up, these results provide a snapshot of what resonates with audiences and what falls short of expectations.

Toy Story 5’s Continued Success

The Toy Story 5 phenomenon shows no signs of slowing down. In its second weekend, the film raked in an impressive $70 million domestically and a staggering $159.1 million worldwide. This brings its global cumulative earnings to $585 million with the film just shy of reaching the $300 million mark in the U.S.

The film’s second-weekend hold of -56% is on par with the performance of Incredibles 2 which holds the record for the best opening of an animated film. Toy Story 5 is second in this category, making its performance all the more impressive. Imax screens contributed significantly, with a $900,000 haul globally, adding to the large format exhibitor’s $24 million total.

Supergirl’s Disappointing Debut

Supergirl faced a challenging opening weekend, with a $38 million domestic debut. While this isn’t the lowest opening for a DC title, it’s far from ideal for a film with a budget ranging from $170 million to $186 million before global spending. The film’s stateside start is lower than Disney/Marvel’s lowest, The Marvels and is dangerously close to the DC disaster, Joker: Folie a Deux.

Globally, Supergirl launched with a dismal $68 million. The only silver lining is the film’s performance in premium format screens, where 51% of its gross came from Imax and other large format screens. The film was shot for Imax, and the exhibitor reports a near 20% share of the weekend, marking the highest opening weekend indexing of any superhero movie in Imax history.

Top-Grossing Venues for Supergirl

The top-grossing venues for Supergirl include AMC Lincoln Square, AMC Burbank, AMC Empire New York, AMC Universal Citywalk Los Angeles, AMC Century City Los Angeles, AMC Disney Springs Orlando, AMC Grove Los Angeles, AMC Metreon San Francisco, AMC Veterans Expressway Tampa, and Santikos Palladium San Antonio.

The Broader Box Office Landscape

The 3 million. Despite this decline, the annual and summer box office remains robust. At $4.7 billion for the period from January 1 to June 28, the motion picture industry is up 15% over 2026 and only -9% off the same frame in 2019.

This summer has officially crossed $2.1 billion up 17% over last summer at this point in time and nearly even with 2019’s hot wave.

Other notable performances include Obsession with $9.8 millionJackass: Best and Last with $8.4 millionDisclosure Day with $8.1 millionBackrooms with $4.3 millionScary Movie with $3 million and Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity with $3 million.

The box office continues to be a dynamic and unpredictable landscape, with Toy Story 5 leading the charge and Supergirl facing an uphill battle. As the summer progresses, it will be interesting to see how these trends evolve and what new releases capture the audience’s imagination.
