The summer of 2026 is proving to be a blockbuster season, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Insidious: Out of the Further leading the charge. These films are not only dominating the box office but also setting new standards for audience engagement and revenue.
The domestic box office has seen a remarkable resurgence, with the total for the year surpassing the $7 billion mark by August 23. This represents a 20% increase over the same period last year and is just 7% behind the figures from 2019, a record year for the industry. The summer season alone has generated $4.4 billion, a 26% increase over last summer and 6% ahead of 2019’s summer performance.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Continues to Web Its Magic
Spider-Man: Brand New Day directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Zendaya, has become Sony’s highest-grossing movie ever. In its fourth weekend, the film grossed $39 million at 4,006 sites, bringing its running total to $854.9 million domestically. This places it just $3.4 million away from surpassing Avengers: Endgame‘s $858.3 million, making it the second highest-grossing movie ever at the domestic box office.
The film’s success is a stark contrast to Sony’s performance a year ago, when the adult-skewing Caught Stealing failed to find an audience. With a production cost of around $65 million, the film opened to $7.8 million but ultimately died at the box office, grossing only $19 million stateside and $33.2 million globally.
Insidious: Out of the Further Scares Up Success
The horror genre continues to thrive, with Insidious: Out of the Further opening to $25.3 million at 3,303 theaters. This marks the fifth time the franchise has opened to over $20 million, with the original 2010 title being the only exception. The film received a C+ CinemaScore, similar to its predecessor, Insidious: Red Door.
The Insidious franchise has a history of fast burns, with the highest domestic gross being Insidious 2 at $83.5 million. The films have consistently drawn a predominantly female audience, with women making up 57% of the viewership for Insidious 6. The film also performed best in the South Central and West regions, where 46% of the gross is currently coming from.
The Power of Social Media
Pre-release social media metrics for Insidious 6 were impressive, with a social media universe of 282.2 million across various platforms. This is higher than the 182 million followers for Insidious: Red Door before its North American opening. The film’s social media presence is also ahead of Sony’s January horror release, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple which had 195 million followers.
The Odyssey Continues to Conquer
The Odyssey directed by Christopher Nolan, is holding strong in its sixth frame with $19.5 million at 3,091 screens. The film has become Nolan’s highest-grossing worldwide, with over $1.44 billion in global revenue. It has also surpassed Dark Knight‘s $534.9 million to become Nolan’s biggest movie at the domestic box office.
The film’s success is largely attributed to its performance on Imax screens, which delivered $10 million this past weekend, accounting for 52% of the frame. The running total for Imax is $180.7 million, the biggest domestic Imax total ever. The end game for Nolan’s highest-grossing movie ever is believed to be $575 million in North America.
Other Notable Releases
Mutiny starring Jason Statham, opened in sixth place with $7.5 million at 2,703 theaters. The film’s start is above Statham’s January title Shelter which bowed to $5.5 million. Mutiny received a B+ CinemaScore, the same as Shelter and Statham’s January hit from a few years ago, The Beekeeper.
Other wide entries at the domestic box office include Spa Weekend from Black Bear, starring Anna Faris, Isla Fisher, Michelle Buteau, and Leslie Mann. The film is expected to gross between $3 million and $5 million at 2,009 sites. Vertical has the Andrew Garfield family movie The Magic Faraway Tree which has already collected more than $32 million at the foreign box office.
