The 405 Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass is set to experience major disruptions this weekend as Caltrans crews continue their extensive repaving project. The ongoing work, part of a $143.7 million Pavement Rehabilitation Project, aims to extend pavement life and enhance safety between Van Nuys and Westwood.
From Friday night to Monday morning motorists can expect intermittent closures and reduced lanes, significantly impacting travel times. The project, which began earlier this year, is crucial for maintaining the freeway’s infrastructure but presents challenges for weekend travelers.
Key Closures and Travel Impacts
The following closures will be in effect from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday
- The southbound 405 will be reduced to two lanes between the connector to the 101 Freeway and the connector between southbound 101 and southbound 405.
- The on-ramp from Burbank Boulevard to southbound 405 will be closed.
- The off-ramp from northbound 405 to Getty Center Drive will be closed.
- The northbound 101 connector to southbound 405 will be closed.
- The southbound 101 connector to southbound 405 will be reduced to one lane.
Motorists are strongly advised to plan ahead budget extra travel time, or find alternate routes to avoid heavy delays. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph in certain sections of the freeway to ensure safety in the work zones.
Additional Work and Noise Considerations
Crews will also work nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday next week. Nearby residents and businesses may experience increased noise, vibrations, and dust during construction hours. Caltrans urges the public to exercise extreme caution when navigating the active construction areas, reminding motorists to ‘Be Work Zone Alert’ and to ‘Slow for the Cone Zone.’
Officials are strongly encouraging drivers to seek alternate routes and explore public transportation options to reach their destinations. For those who must travel through the Sepulveda Pass, using public transportation or following the official Caltrans detour route is recommended.
Official Detour Route
Motorists traveling on northbound 101 should exit at the Sepulveda Boulevard off-ramp, travel south directly on Sepulveda Boulevard, and re-enter the freeway via the Sepulveda Boulevard on-ramp to southbound 405.
Real-time highway conditions and live closure updates can be monitored closely by checking the Caltrans Quickmap website or the Caltrans D7 News portal before heading out.
Looking Ahead
The same closures are planned for next weekend, from July 24-27. The extensive repaving project is a significant undertaking designed to improve the freeway’s condition and safety for all travelers. As the project progresses, motorists should stay informed and prepared for potential travel disruptions.
